A smooth gradient should move gradually from one tone to the next. When that transition breaks into visible stripes, rings, or blocks, you are seeing banding. The effect is especially easy to notice in dark skies, shadows, fog, and game menus because those scenes contain broad areas with small changes in brightness.
The important point is that visible banding does not automatically mean the panel is defective. The source can be the image, video compression, browser rendering, graphics output, cable or input range, display processing, or the panel itself. A controlled screen gradient test helps narrow the possibilities.
What Gradient Banding Looks Like
On a grayscale ramp, banding appears as vertical or horizontal steps where the image should look continuous. In a color gradient, the steps may also shift hue, producing green, pink, yellow, or blue zones.
Do not confuse banding with panel uniformity. A uniformity problem stays in a fixed physical area of the screen, such as one dark vertical column. Gradient banding follows the tones in the image. Rotating the test is useful: if a physical stripe stays in place while the gradient changes direction, inspect uniformity separately with the screen uniformity test.
Why Bit Depth Matters
An 8-bit signal provides 256 code values per color channel. That is usually enough for normal desktop work, but processing, compression, and dark-tone expansion can make the gaps between values visible. A true 10-bit path provides more intermediate values and can reduce contouring in compatible applications and content.
However, selecting 10-bit output is not a universal fix. The application, operating system, graphics driver, connection, monitor input, and panel processing must all handle the signal correctly. Some panels also use temporal dithering to simulate additional shades. Dithering can look smooth in motion even when a static camera image shows a fine pattern.
Signal Problems to Check First
Before blaming the monitor, verify these common causes:
- Set the display to its native resolution.
- Confirm the graphics output and monitor agree on full or limited RGB range.
- Disable vivid modes, dynamic contrast, and strong shadow enhancement.
- Compare SDR and HDR rather than assuming their gradients should match.
- Try another browser and a local high-quality gradient image.
- Check whether the source content is heavily compressed.
If only streamed video shows bands, compression is the likely cause. If screenshots contain the same bands when viewed on another display, the issue is in the source or rendering pipeline rather than the physical panel.
How to Run the Gradient Test
Start with grayscale and view the screen from your normal distance. Look for abrupt steps from black to white, then switch to red, green, and blue. A problem in only one channel may indicate color processing or channel clipping.
Next, rotate the gradient. Panel-aligned defects remain fixed on the display, while gradient contouring rotates with the test. Finally, compare the result in another browser or input mode without changing several settings at once.
When the Monitor Is More Likely Responsible
The display becomes a stronger suspect when the same bands appear across multiple sources, browsers, cables, and devices, particularly when their physical position does not change. Severe black crush, clipped highlights, or tinted sections that persist after a factory reset also deserve investigation.
Minor contouring visible only when searching for it on a test pattern may never affect real use. Make return or warranty decisions based on repeatable problems in normal photos, games, films, or design work, not the existence of any visible step under extreme inspection.
