Bright corners on a dark LCD screen are often described as backlight bleed, but many cases are actually IPS glow. The distinction matters because IPS glow changes with viewing position, while backlight bleed is a more fixed patch of light caused by the panel and backlight assembly.
A pure black backlight bleed test makes both effects visible. The next step is to move your head and change distance rather than deciding from one photograph.
What IPS Glow Looks Like
IPS glow is viewing-angle dependent. It often appears as a pale silver, amber, or bluish haze in the corners, especially when you sit close to a large screen in a dark room. Move farther back or shift your head toward the bright corner and the glow usually changes in intensity or location.
Some IPS glow is a normal characteristic of the panel technology. Whether it is acceptable depends on screen size, seating distance, brightness, room lighting, and whether it distracts you in normal content.
What Backlight Bleed Looks Like
Backlight bleed tends to stay fixed near an edge or corner when your viewing position changes slightly. It may resemble a narrow bright wedge, patch, or strip where light escapes through the panel layers.
Mechanical pressure and assembly variation can affect bleed. It can change as a new monitor warms up or settles, but users should not loosen screws, press the panel, or disassemble a display. Those actions can damage the screen and void a warranty.
What Clouding Looks Like
Clouding is broader backlight non-uniformity across the panel rather than a narrow edge leak. It can appear as pale patches on black or very dark gray. Local-dimming displays may also show halos around bright objects; that is a separate behavior related to the size and control of dimming zones.
A Reliable Comparison Method
Use the following process:
- Set the monitor to the brightness you normally use.
- Dim the room, but do not require total darkness.
- Open the pure black test field in full screen.
- Sit centered at your normal viewing distance.
- Move your head slightly left, right, up, and back.
- Compare the pure black field with 1%, 2%, and 5% gray.
If the bright region changes dramatically with your position, IPS glow is more likely. If it remains sharply fixed, bleed is more likely. The screen uniformity test can then show whether the issue continues into normal gray levels.
Why Camera Photos Can Be Misleading
Phone cameras often increase exposure automatically in a dark room, making normal glow look severe. Wide-angle lenses also view screen corners at a stronger angle than your eyes do from the center.
If you need warranty evidence, lock exposure, place the camera near your eye position, and include the monitor brightness and room conditions. A photo should document what you can see, not amplify an effect that is invisible during use.
OLED Screens Are Different
OLED and QD-OLED panels do not use a backlight, so they cannot have traditional backlight bleed or IPS glow. A black field can still reveal stuck pixels, reflections, raised-black processing, or panel uniformity issues. For OLED blotches and near-black bands, use gray fields rather than diagnosing them as bleed.
When to Consider a Return
Evaluate the screen during the content and lighting conditions you bought it for. A fixed bright patch that remains distracting in dark games, films, or professional work is more significant than glow visible only in a long-exposure photo.
Before returning the display, repeat the test at normal brightness, compare another input, and allow the panel to warm up. Record repeatable evidence and check the retailer's return window rather than attempting a physical repair.
